1/21/09 Saturday

Fresh snow up to 1-1.5' and drifting at higher elevations. Expect trail to be loosely packed by day's end. Looks like the snow's gonna get replenished 1/22-23.

Equipment: I'd say snowshoes are required, though 4 made it up w/o them. Snowshoes were fine for the summit block.

The trail had not been touched since the mid-week snow. Snow about 4-6" at bottom. I wore snowshoes and passed 7 people, all barebooting, none with snowshoes. New snow increased to 1-1.5'. I was sinking about a foot into the new snow w/ snowshoes. The new powder was great, if a bit tiring to break through. Lots of drifing up top on the ridge, where I plowed my way up, over, and through a couple 5' drifts. 2 of the booters (w/ crampons) made it up after me. On the way down, just below the summit, passed one guy on snowshoes with 2 more of the barebooters behind him. Had been hoping for Flume, but after the slow-going up to Liberty, there was no way.

Heading out, saw that someone had headed over to Flume Slide during the day.
