Date of Hike: 4/29/09
Trail Conditions: Lower half dry with stretches of running water. Upper half narrow monorail widening to deep snow.
Special Equipment: Gor-Tex for brook crossing, poles for narrow monorail, traction for upper half.
Comments:
Brook crossing in the morning required stepping on submerged rocks under rushing water; crossing easier by afternoon. Rock-hard icy monorail began when trail steepened, but could be barebooted to either side of monorail. About a half mile before camp site the trail filled with 2-3 feet of snow, as were the surrounding woods. Used micro spikes from there to summit and back. Temps were in the 30s in the a.m., so monorail was icy and snow was firm. Crampons would have been fine. In the coming weeks, expect softening snow, postholing, and some use of snowshoes.
Magnificent views at the summit. The narrow uneven monorail made the descent slower than under winter conditions. Compared to two previous summer hikes, however, the cool temps and snow on upper half made this hike a joy. Six hours from Whitehouse trailhead.
