Well I was bored today, needed to get out of the house. So I decided a little bushwhack between rain drops. I'm working on completing the Shelving Rock Quad and this was one of the three I needed.
I approached this peak from the Shelving Rock Road from the NE. There are all kinds of camping sites along this road, my approach was from camp 11. The woods started out very wet under foot, muddy, slippery, and very unstable. Of course the pitch was pretty steep, and it had rained the night before. This was a steady climb through very open forest. First open evergreen/hardwood mix, then mixed hardwoods, then back to the evergreen mix, and then returning to the hardwoods on the summit.
There are quite a few rock slabs to hike on along this ridge, none offer any real views though. Very little downed trees, the few that were there, were easy to avoid.
The summit is rock outcropping, which seemed to be the home of a family of chipmunks-I touched the top and retired to a lower rock-in fear of loosing my lunch to a set of thieving rodents. Cute rodents though.
Well there I was, on top, no view except for Buck through a small opening in the trees. At that moment I had to step into the woods to..well...you know, and I noticed a couple cairns further along. So, I threw on my pack and checked it out. So, to mu surprise there was a very light path, marked with a few rock cairns leading to the end of the ridge. I couldn't get my pack off fast enough and start taking pictures. It led to an open ledge covered in grass, and blueberry bushes. There were a few nice rock perches to sit on, and it was so close to Lake George it looked as though you could jump in. This was the place for lunch, but I was out of food. I knew I should have thrown those extra granola bars in my pack.
On the way down I headed a little left of my route up, and the woods were even more open than before. Half way down I decided to try and not touch a branch, and it was easy. If it weren't for that slippery rock, I wouldn't have even gotten dirty.
