Date of Hike: 1-24-09
Trail Conditions: Nice hard packed trail from bottom all the way to top of Little Haystack. Solid ice and snow bridges over almost all streams.
Special Equipment Required: I was in microspikes throughout, others were either barebooting or on snowshoes. Definitely needed all the winter gear today, including goggles, if you wanted to spend more than 2 seconds above treeline.
Comments: Optional – actual air temps probably few degrees below zero on top, but wind chill had things much colder than that! I passed about 6 hikers coming down from Little Haystack, and all said they decided not to cross the Ridge due to very poor visibility. When I got up there, I could see why folks weren't pushing on. Winds were fierce and blowing right into my face......cloud cover was so thick that I couldn't even see Mt. Lincoln. I decided not to tempt fate.... especially since I was flying solo. Still, had a good workout and was treated to halfway decent views over towards Cannon and over to the Bonds.
