I have not, but I hear it's a great side trip from the ermine brook slide. If you go and can't find anyone to go, I would like to tag along...

Ermine Brook

Hiya,

Thanks for the note. Biking is an interesting thought. I had figured it to be a fast walk (much like from the Loj to Marcy Dam), but as I have not hiked that part I didn't realize that the path was suitable for mountain bikes (or that they were permitted on the trail). (Or do you do extreme mountain biking in addition to extreme hiking?)

I am curious about your description of the trip after you left the bikes. Looking at the map I had thought to follow Ermine Brook further E and around the sharp bend to the N. To continue following it N pass to where it splits (with the E branch being a backdoor to big Santanoni). It looks as if the brook ends in a small pond NE of the shoulder that you mention. But from the pond it looks like a fairly easy whack W to Little Santanoni.

Going the way you describe did you follow the first tributary off to the NE?

Did you consider the route I've described?

Thanks for your notes. I did Calamity from Flowed Lands and then whacked over to Mt. Adams from Calamity this past weekend. I do NOT recommend that whack (though if the weather had been nice we would have had several great views and we would have spent less time deciding where we were). Nice to hear that Lil' Santanoni is more pleasant!

Little Santanoni from the East.

;)

Hi Ebbinghaus,

Tom Haskin & Us, the 02-22-02, after hiked Panther, We attacked the enemy by bushwhacked from the last col, just over 1250 m, & summited Little Santanoni, We come back by the same tracks and summited Santanoni before returned by the usual Santanoni parking.
Fortunately, the path was broking and the snow gave a good support,
I do not remember to have a bib trouble with blowdown and too dense forest,
may be it is different before a good snow cover.

"ebbinghaus", using the map for REF: I followed parallel on the left of stream branch split of Ermine Brook and continued a straight line up to the shoulder ridge SE of the summit, mentioned earlier, then a left curling turn up to the summit area. From the map those white narrow areas would probably be open cliff faces, something I was not equipped to deal with. The road/horse trail to Ermine Brook is kind of rough (rocky) in spots. You have to be very careful and walk the bike up some inclines too. I figured my bushwhack route was about 2 mi. each way; your suggestion (if I'm following it correctly) appears to add another mile or so.

A long but easy-ish bushwhack. Dirt roads and trails, and the bushwhack part is all open woods.
Pouring rain from before the summit almost all the way back to the car. The wettest I've ever been without swimming.

FYI Bikes are not permitted

I had planned to bike as an approach for this peak as well. But was glad that I left it home and opted to run because they are only allowed on the road until the turn off for the Camp.
The woods were quite open and also quite wet for my day to peakbag w/o views. Maybe I can rally some interest in going back to climb the Ermine Brk Slide?! :)
