We are driving up on Thursday night to hike Stratton on Friday, and will be arriving too late to set up a tent. I'm looking for a low-cost but clean motel, preferably east of Stratton rather than near Manchester. Doesn't have to be too close, but better Jamaica than Londonderry.

I appreciate your suggestions, for restaurants as well.

Maybe this isn’t close enough to Stratton, but last year I spent a night at the Molly Stark Motel on Route 9 on the outskirts of Brattleboro. It was relatively inexpensive. Free Wi-Fi (if I recall correctly, there was a sign; I don’t have a laptop so I couldn’t check it out), good diner within walking distance down the road, but no sidewalk or much of a shoulder so it can be pretty scary if you try walking it during Tropical Storm Hanna, as I did.

I don’t remember what I did for breakfast. I probably heated some water in the room and made oatmeal, but I wouldn’t swear to that.

There are lean-tos available at the Grout Pond Recreation area, literally across the street from the Stratton TH. It's not a motel, but you don't have to pitch a tent...and since you're right there, you can sleep in a little more the next day.

Thanks for the suggestions. Driving ninety minutes from Brattleboro to the Stratton trailhead isn't very practical. And since we will be arriving between eleven and twelve at night, neither is hiking to a lean-to at Grout Pond.

All I can find in the Stratton area are expensive inns and bed-and-breakfasts. Is there someplace cheap in Manchester? All I remember driving through were outlet stores and resorts. What's The Equinox now, $600 a night?

Question: do you want lodging near the town of Stratton (north side of the mountain, where the ski area is), or near the most commonly-used trailhead to climb Stratton (south side of the mountain, Stratton-Arlington road (dirt), and not much around by way of towns)? If the latter, West Dover has a lot of places based on Google, all around Mt. Snow, around 10 miles from the trailhead (about a 22 minute drive).

Thanks for these suggestions. Very useful. We ended up booking a low-cost motel at Arlington, which should be close enough.

As far as restaurants go, I like Bob's diner and Zoeys, both on Rt 30 east of Rt 7.
