Trails are in excellent shape. GMC Trail Crews have brushed out the Lye Brook Trail this summer so that even through the Lye Brook Wilderness area there is no mistaking the route. After a dry August, the footbed is soft and mostly dry. A mile before Bourn Pond there are some succulent late-season blackberries. Going north on the Branch Pond Trail about one and a half miles north of the North Bourn Pond tenting area, there is a major beaver infestation. A herd path is developing to the right (east side) of the flooded area as people bushwhack around the water. Rest of the trail to the Douglas Shelter is an easy walk. (Nice shelter - well-designed and built/renovated.)
The Old Rootville Road from Prospect Rock to the pavement is a very steep downhill - a bit tough on creaky mid-60s knees. Maybe 2 and a half miles of roadwalk makes this a nice loop hike - 14 trail miles plus the highway.
Met only two people - two USFS trail patrolers headed south from Douglas shelter in the afternoon.
