Although this peak is listed as #47 and technically not required for the ADK 46, even though it's higher than four others on the original list, what is the general consensus among 46er's on including this mountain.

It's actually sort of listed on the 46R web page, ( http://www.adk46r.org/listf.html ), but it very clearly says 'MacNaughton (4000') is not required'. I intend to climb it some day.

"The 46" is the 46 climbed by the Marshalls and Herb Clark

A lot do climb this peak. No one really cares, and it's basically a matter of personality. Some "must" climb it.

The route from the Hunter Pond side is beautiful, and was quite thick when we did it. Supposedly there is a more defined herdpath now.

If you really wanted to climb the list down to Couchy, I think there is another 16 that you could include. Of course, you could also just climb the ones that are 4000' or higher, which would be 42. Remember, there are thousands of climbers who have climbed all 46, are 46ers, but who didn't feel like submitting the materials and documentation to the 46ers office to become an offically numbered 46er. In the end, your inner climbing companion will probably make the choice for you!

There is no better feeling than being at one with your inner climbing companion.

Yard and Middle Table Top

And on the subject of extra Adirondack 4000 footers. There are two others that would qualify (0.75 mile or 300' rise) based on the 1950 era and current metric maps. Although as already pointed out the 46ers do not modify the list of 46:
  • Yard, 1222m or 4009', would qualify based on being more than 0.75 mile, although only a 236' rise from Big Slide.
  • Middle Table Top (aka Table Top #2), 1312m or 4304', would qualify based on having a 301' rise, although less than 0.75 mile from Table Top.
  • MacNaughton, 1214m, 3983', would not qualify based on the 1978 Ampersand Lake quad, although it was shown at 4000' on the 1953 Santanoni quad
All three are on the various Northeast 3000 foot lists (770 peaks). Yard and Middle Table Top are on the Peakbagger.com Northeast USA 4000-foot Peaks list. The latter list uses a 160' clean prominence criteria. That is nearly equivalent to 200' col rise or optimistic prominence that is used on most northeast lists (given the 40' contours on some White Mountain maps). Also note that the Peakbagger.com list omits many 46er peaks that only qualified for the 46er list based on distance (although they are shown unnumbered for completeness, along with many other named peaks).

List...no list...peakbagging...doesn't matter to me.

MacNaughton was a great hike well worth the effort.

I'd do it again.
