Ascended via Macomb slide, followed ridge over Carson to Grace, back over Carson to the col south of the summit, then Lillian Brook HP down to Dix trail, back to Elk Lake. Dix trail relatively dry to Slide Brook. Herd path to slide is a beauty. Slide was no problem...a little wet from the heavy morning clouds. From exit of slide to summit is a little muddier, and the trees were soaked and consequently so were we! The remainder of the herd path from Macomb summit all the way out to Grace (E. Dix) and down Lillian Brook was fantastic. Very nice hiking, not too muddy, not too rocky...a little tight in spots but not annoyingly so. Last quarter to half mile before reaching the Dix trail is a bit more muddy, and also grown in a bit with maple saplings. No real problems, just a little bothersome after such wonderful hiking on the way down. No bugs.

Equipment needed: Waterproof boots, collapsible trek poles a big help on the slide and other steep sections. Gaiters weren't necessary...I removed mine at the slide and had no need to put them back on.
