Madison/Adams/Jefferson via Valley Way/Star Lake/Gulfside/Israel Ridge/The Link Trails 3/14/09

Date of Hike: 3/14/09

Trail Conditions: Valley way was a hard packed runway which made for quick sailing. All the trails above treeline were ice/snow covered and hard as concrete. Lots of postholes on Israel Ridge Trail at the start of treeline on our descent, kind of a shock after a very maneuverable day spent on the trails above treeline.

Special Equipment Required: Definitely traction gear! Microspikes gave us the needed grip to make excellent time up Valley Way. We stayed with micros our entire trip across the 3 peaks. Crampons would have been the best choice in a couple places, but micros worked well. We strapped on snowshoes for the descent down Israel Ridge & The Link trails.

Comments:
* Fantastic time above treeline on the last weekend hike of this winter season! Sunny skies throughout the day, long views in all directions, stiff winds (40 mph with gusts of around 60 mph) but relatively mild temps.
* We had an exciting time bushwhacking up the steep, ice & snow encrusted slope of JQ Adams. Steve R loved the experience so much, he now intends to get into technical climbing.
* Saw around 15 other hikers at various points along our trip.
* Maple Porter tasted especially good when we got back to the ranch.
