On our continuing quest to stand on every site a fire tower is, once stood or was proposed brought us to back to Magalloway Mountain, our 1st Fire Tower. We needed to get the video for the project we are working, so a revisit was needed.
The trailhead for Magalloway Mountain is 8 miles down dirt roads off RT 3 to get there. On the second road that goes down to the trailhead, the low tire pressure light came on. As soon as we parked I got out and check all the tires. The front passenger side appeared a little low but holding, so instead of turning around and heading out, we winged it.
There are two trails heading up Magalloway, the Coot Trail, which they say is an old Jeep road, and the Bobcat Trail. We headed up the Coot Trail and although, it didn’t seem as steep as it did in 2006, it is still steep. It’s is only 0.8 miles long, but we felt it a little bit. At the summit there is a storage shed, Fire Warden cabin that can be rented for $65 a night and of course the fire tower. This tower is also on the NH Fire Lookout Tower Quest of the 15 active fire towers left. Mt Magalloway is also on 52WAV.
Off to the left of tower is a trail that heads down to overlook. We headed down there and found the Geocache, then checked out the views. After that we came back, climbed the tower for better views.
We headed back down the taking the Bobcat Trail, it is off to the left a short way down the Coot Trail. It is a much nice trail, being easier and come out about 50 yards further down from the Coot Trailhead. Overall it was a great little hike to a piece of NH History.
Oh and about the tire, it still was holding air, so we rode to Young’s brought a tire gauge and filled the tire. Heading down RT 3 we saw Young’s Auto Repair, so we pulled in and he plugged the tire for us. A big thank you to him. We really didn’t feel like charging a tire out in the middle of nowhere.
