Friday was great!
Not expecting much good in the way of weather, I picked up my ride, Andrea, on Friday morning and headed north from Boston. Passing through Twin Mountain we saw both a dead moose and a busload of leafpeeping Amish (many women in blue dresses and white bonnets plus some skinny guys with bushy beards). Found Success Pond Road without any trouble and made our
way to the Notch Trailhead. The two miles up to the Mahoosuc Trail were a lovely, sunny woods walk. The Notch itself was a lot of fun, but was enjoying the scrambling so much, I only took two pictures. Actually met a through hiker, Phoenix coming southbound. She had already hiked GA to Va (where she's from) and was now hiking the ME-to-VA half.
The drive out Success Pond Road was excellent. The fall colors were at their peak, and the hills were a mass of vibrant oranges and reds.
Saturday was soggy.
Eleven of us from Harvard Cabin geared up and headed for Kearsarge North, fully expecting to get thoroughly drenched. While it never rained that hard, it never stopped raining. The trail and the ledges were awash for much of the way. Thank goodness for the fire tower where we could eat our lunches in relative comfort and dryness. Between the rain and all the sweating we did, we did indeed get drenched.
Driving down Route 16 I admired all the overflowing ponds and rivers. In Ossipee we had to slow down to get through a good 6 inches of water on Rte. 16 itself.
