Why even bother to file a trip report so late? Because so few other hikers file them for Maine peaks, and I enjoy helping out other hikers.
I started off from the Saddleback Ski Area. Don’t look for a sign for this ski resort, because there isn’t any. Look for the Dallas Hill Rd. road sign instead. A good reference point would be the observation point over Rangeley Lake on the other side of Maine Hwy. 4, just a few 100(?) feet South of Dallas Hill Rd.
The road starts off or turns into dirt, but is in pretty good shape. There is a decent snack bar at the ski resort, about what you could expect from a Subway or D’Angelos. The ski resort people were very friendly & helpful w/ guidance on which ski trails to take.
The summits on both Saddleback and The Horn are signed, with the wooden type that you find on the Carters, with mileages for the AT. It was sometimes hard to keep on the trail on the area from the cones to the col. So when I couldn’t see the trail immediately before me, I looked and far off in the distance I was able to see a blaze (even though they were white against a background of snow) or, less frequently, someone else’s tracks.
Visability was ok, enough to be able to see that it would’ve been a gorgeous view with just a little bit less clouds. As far as accomodations go, I would recommend a fellow hiker’s place, http://www.maineroadhouse.com. Don was very willing to help with trail info, car spotting, etc., and took down my route along w/ what time I expected to be back.
I took pix, should be posting them sometime soon- PM me to remind me if I’ve not posted the link & you need them for reference.
