The herd path has many signs of very recent maintenance. All stream crossings and dubious changes in direction are marked by cairns or flagging or both. The flagging is discrete, yet easily spotted. About halfway up there is one humungous, non-negotiable quagmire on the herd path, but at that point the rocks in the stream are flat and, though mossy, not too slippery. The worst mudholes were on the Calamity Brook trail below the Henderson monument, and on the trail between Calamity Lean-to and the start of the herd path. The day we chose to do this had been forecast to be the pick of the week so of course it rained, but at least it held off until we left the summit. The best view from Marshall is really not from the top, but going back down the herd path on the Lake Colden side, with Iroquois and the Shepards Tooth looming up directly to the east. And the stream and the adjacent woods have the greenest moss in the Adirondacks. It's a beautiful path.
