Had a beautiful day doing a loop hike of Marshall from Upper works. First time doing the standard Herbert Brook approach. Very nice. Snow conditions were excellent on way up. Bushwack from Summit over to "Iroquois pass" was nearly impenetrable in spots. Also, trail south from the summit of Indian pass was patchy and in places very muddy and wet. yuck. So, in summary: beautiful day, excellent ascent, not so pleasant descent. Still, an interesting and varied loop. Here's the full trip report with pictures:

Between "Iroquois (or Cold Brook) Pass" and Marshall there is an excellent herd, or minimum maintainance, path. I doubt it is ever used in winter. I wonder if you had had someone's summer tracklog of it if you would have been able to locate it and stay on it.

Due to the style of forest, that path is EXTREMELY difficult to follow in the winter. It is one of those kind of paths, that you can be 6 feet away from it, and not realize ti is there. I remember walking it ... and working on it, in August, then trying to find it in an Oct snow, and I couldn't, even though it was rather fresh in my mind.... years ago.... back then when I had a mind....

Oh yeah... the name of that pass. It has been called by several names, but it was only called Cold Brook pass recently. A name that caught a lot of people by surprise, but now since there is a sign calling it that (before there were no signs with its name), it will probably come to be called that.

Well, I did have someone's tracklog... my own! but unfortunately it was a previous winter tracklog; I don't think I was on the right route then either.

So, if you look at my tracklog (overlain on the topo) on the map on page 4 of my TR, is the correct route to the east or to the west of the way we went? Do you completely traverse around the intermediate bump between Marshall's summit and the pass, or do you still end up going over it....

One thing I did notice, very distinctly, is that on the traverse from the summit to the pass, the slopes facing north were very much more "open" and easy to hike in, while the south-facing slopes were much, much denser, with smaller and more tightly packed-together trees.

You go right over the bump but I don't know the path well enough (having only done it once nearing the end of a very long day) to say whether your log goes east or west of it.

I just wanted to say excellent TR. I really love your format, and your pictures are great. I like the route you chose, and I think I would like to try it with my wife/boys when they get older.

Great trip report.

I really enjoyed your website and marked it as a resource for Adirondacks information since I am getting ready to start on the 46. Look forward to reviewing all of your reports.
