LenDawg, Drewski, Snake, Daddy Dan, Allstar, Edlardo and I headed out to get Sandwich Dome and play a little extreme croquet this morning, well, nearly afternoon. After a leiseurly start with LOTS of coffee and waffles we hit the trail. It was a little cool at the start, but the trail was dry and once we got moving, layers were removed, like normal. The trail we headed up was the Gleason Trail. There were a lot of blowdowns and such blocking the way, but certainly dooable. It was a slow leiseurly pace for most of us, with a lot of stops and chatting and checking on the 2 younger hikers to make sure they were ok and drinking enough etc... This trail seemed as though it circles around the dome several time before you finally pop out onto the summit. I kept thinking, wow, we are almost there, only to finally realize we were not... Once on the summit, we realized there were far to many humans and rocks to pound in the wickets for the extreme croquet. We ate our lunch, lolled around in the warm sun, and then headed down the Bennett trail. This trail seemed to me to be in much better shape, and with very few blowdowns. IT slowly meandered out of the forest and stuck close to the river for most of it. A lot of little river/stream crossings. All very dooable and safe. All in all, this was a great day out, followed by a quick trip to the Sandwich Creamery, for a half pint of ice cream each, right there in the parking lot! YUMMY! Thanks to all the boys for an enjoyable day out there, even though I still have fish belly white skin!
Hope to hike with all of you again very soon! Jefferson anyone?!
