trails: logging road, bushwack, herd path
conditions: wheelerville road open for 5 miles from rt. 4 according to sign at the start. road has had extensive repairs post irene and is in good shape to the bucklin trailhead. headed up logging road that starts beyond a gate just past the entrance to the parking lot. road in good shaped to start then eroded later on. lots of damage around the crossings of eddy brook and the lowest one could be confusing coming down if you haven't ascended that way. all crossings rock hoppable and the rocks are as slippery as advertised in many prior posts. crossed the brook 4 times, 2 crossings of the main brook then across two forks before climbing steeply with significant erosion to the first of 3 cairns. continued to the 3rd cairn then headed into the woods roughly southwest. the woods is heavily travelled, but no real herd path to start. i went a bit too southerly and had to correct going through some nasty bits until picking up the herd path part way up the peak. there is a limited view on the subpeak then a fabulous view on another bump before the true summit reached by a side herd path and then pushing through some thick stuff to a rocky outcrop. the herd path continues to the summit then drops to a clearing where the canister is sort of hidden on the back side of a tree. the log book is getting close to full if someone wants to toss another one in there sometime down the line when they are up there. on the descent i was able to follow the herd path much farther before losing it at which point i headed roughly north/northeast coming out of the woods at the second cairn. lots of swarming flies on the summit made for a short visit.
equipment: navigational tools of your choice.
comments: second hike of the day so a mid afternoon start made for some warm walking. irene damage along eddy brook is impressive as is that on wheelerville road. mostly ended up in decent woods heading to mendon, except for one section before finding the herd path and the view from the rocky outcrop to killington, pico, etc. was fantastic. i knew there was a view up there, but didn't know it was that nice. was rushing a bit as i had to get home by a given time which led to some sloppy navigation, but once on the herd path it was just a walk in the woods. quick descent on the road once off of the steep upper portion. great day to be out.
