Middle and South Carter Mountains via Imp, North Carter, Carter-Moriah, Carter Dome and Nineteen Mile Brook Trails
Date of Hike: Monday, November 17
Trail Conditions: Down low, Imp and Nineteen Mile Brook trails in good shape. About halfway up to the ridge, all trails become very wet -- mud-baths and streams. A half mile from the ridge, water turns to sheets of ice. On the ridge, four or five inches of brand-spanking-new snow on top of ice makes for plenty of winter fun.
Although there was much water on parts of some trails, real water crossings were not an issue.
Special Equipment Required: Stabilicers or Microspikes are recommended for the ice patches on the upper elevations. Otherwise, everything was bare-bootable.
Comments: We had snow showers at the lower levels for most of the day and bona fide snow at the upper elevations punctuated by blue skies and sun for some nice, fleeting views from the ridge trail. We had the trails to ourselves again and saw all of two people all day, and this was at the Nineteen Mile Brook Trail parking lot -- two people with a dog had gone up Carter Dome.
ANOTHER NOTE: we parked at the Nineteen Mile Brook trailhead and walked up Rt. 16 to AMC Camp Dodge and took the logging road (freshly re-cut) to pick up the southern half of the Imp Trail. Quick and easy.
