Trails: Imp Loop (up north branch, down south branch), North Carter, Carter-Moriah.
Conditions: Dry trail, muddy trail, patchy snow, full snow, soft snow, ice -- the full April complement. Several blowdowns, but all save one are easily negotiated. The one that isn't is just high enough to make climbing over it a minor chore.
Equipment: Traction above 2,200-2,400 feet. Above Imp Face I switched from Microspikes to snowshoes after becoming frustrated with postholing deeply several times, and I kept them on for the rest of the climb to the summit and for the descent down to 2,600 feet. Wore the Microspikes for a short time on the descent, then barebooted from 2,400 feet to the bottom.
Comments: Lots of mud on the long, flat 1.5-mile stretch at the bottom of the south branch of Imp Loop. Snow very choppy and weak where the south branch parallels and is sometimes on top of Cowboy Brook.
