With Mother Nature not wanting to cooperate with our vacation plans, we had a plan B. Part of that plan involved updating the a couple towers on the Fire Tower map and hitting 100 geocaches before the vacation was over. Well we got to 102 geocaches and updated one tower the same day. Mind you that it poured most of the day until the late afternoon, then turned out nice.
We returned to Milan Hill State Park to revisit our 23rd fire tower. This tower is an active tower, but we we were told it is only manned about 2 weeks during the spring. It is on the NH Fire Lookout Tower Quest offered by the State along with the NH Fire Tower List. Our first visit was during the winter and we were impressed by how all the roads were groomed for cross country skiing. This time we were impressed too. The park is a great place to go and spend some time and maybe have a picnic with the family.
We were able to take the access road to the top. We stopped and chatted with the Caretaker and his dog for a bit. He told us to park anywhere up along the road. We parked by the pavilion and took a tour of what we didn't get a chance to see during the winter.
The only hiking involved on this trip consisted of walking around the park and climbing the tower. There is a playground for the kiddos, picnic tables and the grounds are mowed and kept up nice. Camping is also available using a tent or renting a Yurt. The old Firewarden's cabin on the other hand is quite run down though and has a tenant that appears to have moved in under the cabin.
If you are in the area and you are bummed because it's raining, check this place out when it stops raining. No real effort involved for some nice views. We did update our map and posted the video for anyone who might like to visit the park.
