Anybody been playing on Monadnock lately? I was wondering about the snow conditions. I'd like to go up via Pumpelly, and was wondering if I needed crampons, since my 2 friends I'm bringing dont have any.

I was up there last saturday and went Cascade to Pompelly and down the Cross. I barebooted all the way. Previous weeks snow had stablized what ice there was and traction was good, although there were a few flatter spots (10 to 30 yards long) where good amount of ice had accumulated and you had to use the sides of the trail. Guys who came up from half house side said there was some ice that forced them to detour and rangers I talked with said if I went Red Spot, as I planned, there is alot of ice. I had crampons and stabilizers but didn't use either.

thanks!

Thanks Kerry!

I was hoping with the forecasted temps of 50s for this Sat of going up Pumpelly. Thanks for the report! I appreciate it. :)

I don't know if this is too outdated, but about 2 weeks ago I took the Pumpelly Trail the whole way out and back. There was very patchy ice, mostly thin but very thick in some places; anything that would have required crampons was fairly easy to bushwhack around. I wore yaktrax for much of the hike and still slipped a few times. There were negligible amounts of snow. I'd imagine the conditions are relatively similar now. Just allow some extra time for negotiating whatever ice is there. It was a great hike, I highly recommend it!

Stabilicers

grouseking,

I just hiked the Pumpelly trail yesterday (3/8/06). I had crampons for some of the steep icy areas, but I thought they were a bit overkill. Stabilicers would probably be perfect. Once you get to the ridgeline the trail is mostly bare rock. Have fun!
