Date of Hike: 1/25/09
B-E-A-utiful day to be out. Mild temperatures, bearable wind, great day for a hike!
Trail Conditions:
The White dot was well packed and bareboot-able for the majority of the way up. I kept the crampons on from start to finish. No need for snowshoes today! On the steeps, traction was usefull but not essential; I saw many people barebooting up until the rock ledges just before the summit where ice and neve were the choices of footing and most switched to crampons.
The White Cross was a pleasant descent with hard packed snow into which my crampons bit well.
Special Equipment Required:
Some sort of traction is highly recommended. Crampons worked best. No need for snowshoes.
Comments: The Dot and Cross were the only two trails open due to the ice storm a few weeks ago and ensuing cleanup effort. The ranger said that anyone caught on any other trails would be arrested and prosecuted. She said that if people trample over blowdowns and such, the snow would set like cement and make it much more difficult to clean up. It definitely makes sense and we found no reason to diverge from the two trails that were open out of respect for the maintenance workers and volunteers, hopefully the rest of the trails will be open soon!
