Trail Conditions: Hard Packed Snow with a few inches of powder most of the way. Some older postholes are not visible. Water crossings were easy. Snow drifts above the last stream crossing & before Lakes of the Clouds Hut were approximately 1 foot. We turned around ~200 feet below the hut because the winds were pretty strong and starting to cover our tracks quickly.
Special Equipment Required: Crampons essential after Gem pool (very lettle exposed rock on trail). Snowshoes not needed due to snow firmness.
Comments: Great day overall for myself, my son Peter, & his friend Kate. Winds were higher than expected & we played it safe once they picked up. This was Kate's first (and not last) winter hike and we all had a great day in the woods. After we turned around (~12:30), we met two other hikers (young men) that seemed well equiped & were heading towards Monroe & possibly Washington??
