When I found out that there is a trail (not really maintained) on Moose Mtn in Hanover/Enfield that followed the ridge pretty much all the way down to Rt 4 in Enfield, I was hooked on wanting to check it out. First, I had to find where to enter the woods. Then I had to find someone as crazy as me to do this hike. Thankfully most of my hiking friends will do pretty much anything, so off we went.
Before we even set out, a gobbling visitor walked by.
I'm not going to post any pics of where we went to enter the woods, though if you want to see some of them, they are on my photo webpage....doesnt really give you any clues anyways. We actually didn't take the correct trail originally. There was one that kind of paralleled the ridge below to the right, but it eventually swung left up the hill and met up the main trail which we continued to follow for a couple of miles.
At best, the trail was...straightforward enough to follow. Some parts were tougher than others, where it seemed like it would disappear, only to reappear again later. Also, I'm pretty sure it split off into two paths at one point for awhile. One side was easy, and the other side was basically a bushwhack. And of course we went that way first..haha
But overall, the ridge we walked along was so narrow, that we were never nervous about getting lost. The thing that made this trip somewhat rough were the ticks, and black flies. I picked 12 of those buggers off me today. In fact it came to a point where I just didn't feel like going forward anymore cause the bugs and ticks were so plentiful. So we turned around about 2.5 miles in, possibly 3. We were almost to the Moose Mtn Lodge. Anyways, pics....
There was some flagging, but this was prob the only blaze I saw all day.
South Moose Mtn ahead
Enfield Reservoir
drink time
I never get tired of taking pics of moose dung. This is just one of like 30 piles of crap I saw within about 1/4 mile
My first painted trillium of the season!
A nice "clear" part of the trail
spectacular view with Smarts mtn on the left
Hunter enjoying the view along the fresh ledges
these were pretty much everywhere
wide open view to cardigan
