I am planning on taking the kayak up to Moosehead Lake and do some camping a few times between now and when I head north again in July.
I understand there are three public places to put in and that there are Maine Forest Service campsites that can be utilized.
Does any one have recommendations as to some nice parts of the Lake...like the North Bay or the East Carry area.. things like that?
I would be interested if another person or so might want to join for a trip or two.
I hope to go for my first time this weekend for an overnight and was wondering if Mt Kineo is a nice place to stretch ones legs for a nice view.
Figured it would be nice to see it before all the development starts.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks

We used to have a camp at the northern end and would spend a lot of time up there. We have a ton of lake maps from the camp, stuff not published and long out of production.

The view from the top of Kineo is great, not sure if the fire tower is still there though. You can leave a car at the Rockwood public landing, Kineo is directly across the bay. You realize it's a 15 to 20 mile paddle from Kineo to the northern end of the lake, don't you?

Be careful of Moosehead, it can blow up like the ocean in no time, leaving you stranded if you're on the wrong shore. There is a nice little campsite at the northen end, between Seboomook and Northeast Carry (in Little W township), that is great for swimming. I know Raymond's Country store is still open in NE Carry (but they close down for the month of mud season), but I'm not sure if Seboomook is still open, the last I had heard they were closed down.

When are you thinking of going, I might be game.

Thanks for the information ...this 1st trip I plan on leaving from Rockwood about 6:30 or 7am this Sat April 22nd for an overnight. Going for an early start and calm winds.
Feel free to send a PM or touch base if you might be interested for this or other possibilities.
I am thinking with the three public landings I would divide the lake in thirds and start to learn my way around that way... hopefully making 3 trips up there. So not to worry I won't be trying to reach the North end from Rockwood.
Trying to get out and about before the blackflies get thick enough to carry me away....

Is the Ice out yet?

Is the ice out of the lake yet?

Fitz good question so I called up there...ice was just out on the 19th.

I have just come down from a visit to the Gaspe Que and saw only open water....then I realized I had only seen the rivers...

Sorry, have to work this weekend.

There are three launching sites at the northen end of the lake, one at Seboomook, one at Northeast Carry, and one at Norcross Brook. However, all 3 are inside the area controlled by the North Woods Coalition, where it'll cost you $$$ per day in addtion to a camping fee. At Rockwood and Greenville there are no fees.

Good luck!
