trails: glencliff, carriage rd., south peak spur

conditions: mix of snow, bare ground and mud down low. walked in about .75 in the morning before putting on snowshoes as conditions were solid with inconsistent coverage. snow rail formed/forming down low. this was all well softened up on the way back down. still full snow coverage after the first mile or so up until just below the summit. upper glencliff had some hard crusty snow on the steeps (and a rail starting to form), but once on the carriage road in the sun it was soft. the numerous postholes on the carriage rd. attest to just how soft it has been getting. the final climb to the summit was a mix of crusty snow, ice and bare rock. good snow coverage on south peak mostly soft in the sun. the one small water crossing down low was easily hopped and the small streams that cross glencliff trail were all still partially running under snow.

equipment: once past the first .75 wore snowshoes to the summit and back to just above the fields the lower trail crosses. light traction could have been used in the morning before things softened up.

comments: nice day to hike moosilauke. was expecting more wind, but it was nearly calm up high. great views to the receding snow on franconia ridge and washington. good day to be out.
