Trail: Beaver Brook out of Kinsman Notch.
Conditions: Firm, packed snow. Some ice patches on The Cascades. Four blowdowns: one easily stepped over, one easily walked under, one at just the right height to make climbing over a chore but too low to walk under, and one -- an old blowdown on The Cascades -- tricky to negotiate due to ice and steepness.
Special equipment: Traction absolutely essential up and down The Cascades -- crampons would not be overkill. Barebooting may be possible above the Beaver Brook Shelter, but I kept my Microspikes on for the entire hike and was glad I did. I brought snowshoes but didn't use them.
*Extremely* windy on the summit.
