Hike: Moriah via Stony Brook, Carter-Moriah Trails, RT 10.0 miles
Very last minute outing, Bill Bowden and I traded emails Friday during lunch break and an outing was planned. Saturday looked to be the best day to go. We met at Hookset Park & Drive @ 6:30 and were on our way to Stony Brook Trail Head on Rt 16. Still pretty dark at 6:30, but it’s a long way for us to get to the TR.
Trail was in good condition. We saw one pathetic blowdown about 2” diameter. Water crossings were easy. Stony Brook Trail is very pleasant and is sheltered from prevailing winds making it good candidate for winter ascents. Footing is good on first 2 miles, but gets bit rough on steep section leading to the col junction with Carter-Moriah. Traffic was light. We only encountered one other party at the summit who came up Carter Moriah Trail and one other party on Stony Brook Trail.
The weather was sunny and mildly cool. Not as cold as I expected. Yet another sunny fall day in the mountains. Almost makes up for the rainy spring. No traction needed today. Only minor patches of ice at 3700’ and higher. It was breezy at the summit. Guessing 25-30 mph. We saw some snow in King Ravine and on Cannon in failing light on way home. Observed good fall foliage at upper elevations in south Whites around Lincoln, but in northern Whites, leaves were off hardwoods above 2500’ or so.
The trail from junction with Stony Brook Trail features many open ledges that offer many fine and changing points of views of the Northern Peaks, Wild River and Great Gulf regions, Carters to south. We were very satisfying with our choice for this day's excursion. RT was 10 miles or so and just long enough to feel satisfied, but not in great pain. Many thanks to Bill for accompanying me on this my #39 and many others.
