Stony Brook Trail up to the Carter Moriah junction is in good shape, well-packed with 6 inches of new powder. Going was easy although either crampons or snowshoes would be helpful for traction as it gets steeper approach the ridge. No post-holing by any of us not wearing snowshoes.
Snow deeper and looser on the ridge approaching Moriah summit with a bit of drifting, and the going was perhaps slower with crampons only. Didn't bother to put on the snowshoes we were carrying. Went down directly on the Carter-Moriah trail into Gorham, and this trail too was nicely packed with 6 inches of light powder on top which was no problem to break.
This was a beautiful day, and two pretty trails we had never been. Clear and dramatic views of the northern Prezzies on the way up to the summit after the junction, and then of the sun setting behind Madison and Adams on the way down. Would have been a great shot, but my camera froze, even inside my jacket. This was Teddy the dog's 18th winter 4Ker.
