I learned yesterday that the Forest Society of NH has acquired the Route 11 trailhead from the State. They now control access and can set policy re parking.

However, parking continues to be allowed on the mountain-side of Route 11 and the town of Alton prohibits parking on the lake-side of the road.

The person I spoke with says there ate no plans afoot to limit access or control numbers.

The entire lot is closed till mid-August while the trail relocation work is ongoing.

There is a beautiful cellar hole in the slight rise on the left of the parking lot, and a really nice big natural spring up in the woods on the left in back of the lot. Many (10++) years ago there was a nice old hollow log culvert where the water from the spring passes the lot. Another nice site in there is the old Ames Family cellar hole several hundred feet past the main trail left turn off of the pioneer road. (43.52286, -71.28628 • Elevation: 945 ft) The Ames family, settled in the area around 1777 and relocated from there to the shore of lake Winnipesaukee heading north up Rte 11 .
