Date of Hike: Tuesday, March 10, 2009
Trail Conditions: Sticky, Spring snow, post holed
Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes
Comments:
Parked across from Sodom Road on Rte.171, took Mt. Shaw Trail to Black Snout Trail, whacked to summit of Black Snout as carriage road had deep drifts. No moose sign this winter. Snow was wet and sticky, 3-4 inches. Steep climb to carriage road was tough.
Hike to Mt. Shaw was better. 3-4/10ths of unpacked carriage road, then the rest on snowmobile packed road. Hazy views, but all mountains were visible. Great spot! Whacked down from the top to avoid switchbacks.
Brooks were all crossed easily, though beginning to expand.
