Beautiful day for this...Monday, March 6th.

Drove 6 miles in from Rte 16/27 in kingfield, last 2+ on roads used by snowmobiles. Parked well off to the side. Started @ 9:28am. Went left from the car @ the fork, over 2 bridges. Followed road packed by snowmobiles for 0.7 miles to sign, probably @ summer trailhead. Sign showed 2.8 miles to cabin and 4.0 to summit.

Used 30" snowshoes from the car. The trail followed streambed quite a bit which could have used more snow, common problem this winter

It was pretty easy walk to the cabin with one of the brook crossings having cracking sounds crossing the ice. The trail was marked with both blue and yellow blazes! Took 1:55 to the cabin. It isn't in great shape but very usable and with a wood stove! Signed the logbook and headed up @ 11:34.

Trail from the cabin didn't appear to be marked. As you come to the cabin, you turn left a bit over 90 degrees @ the trail sign. It is fairly steep, at times, from the cabin. After about 20 minutes I switched to full crampons and left my snowshoes leaning against a tree. Turned out I'd already been over the steepest part! The trail was well backed except for some short drifts. There were a couple of small blowdowns to crawl under.

About a mile from the cabin you come out into the open and the surface was not ice but very crusted blown off snow(almost ice in spots)...definately need crampons! The views were great!!! The wind wasn't bad either. It was a bit scary for me as it was quite steep and I hadn't been on a surface like this before, which added to the "thrill factor" It was GREAT!!!

That last half mile did seem a bit longer and would have been reeeaaallly tough in bad weather for sure! The cairns that were there were small and not always easy to spot! Sure I didn't always follow the "trail'. Went through a small patch of short evergreens with some drifting, but it was short. The Tower finally came into view and soon I was there...gorgous :D Spent 10 minutes on the summit taking pictures and looking around.

Started down @ 1:25. Took care placing each step on the way down, going very slowly til I got back into the woods. Picked snowshoes up, stopped to eat @ the cabin, put shoes back on and got back to the car @ 3:57 feeling great! What a beautiful Mountain!!!

Since driving up last Friday I'd been able to climb the Crockers in quite a snowstorm higher up(my tracks were filled in already on the way back!) on Saturday, found my way up Redington yesterday and was very fortunate to have great conditions for Abraham today! Feel truly blessed :)

Driving on snowmobile roads

Have recieved a comment about doing this.

When I was checking out the way to the trailhead there were 2 folks coming towards me on snowmobiles @ the point the road was used by snowmobiles. I talked with them and they told me I could probably drive in another mile. I had checked and my tires weren't sinking in @ all...the road was covered in solid ice with some snow. Had I sunk in/rutted it up, I wouldn't have driven in.

I did wonder, however, if it might be "soft" on the way out??? Turned out to be fine.

Anyone care to comment on situations such as this? pros/cons/experiences. Probably should be a new thread.

Dear MTNRUNR,
Excellent trip report. You have been quite busy!

Abraham is definitely a special summit. Glad you got some views. Like yourself, I climbed Redington just before Abraham. While hiking the log roads to/from Redington, Abraham is the most constant view and was most impressive. I kept thinking what a cool mountain it will be to hike. It surely did not disappoint.

Good luck on your continued hiking!

Best regards,
Marty

Another Abraham fan here. I love it because there are hardly ever any people on it and the views are impressive. The trail is a bit tough to follow in places... I wouldn't want to try to find my way from the summit back to treeline in bad weather.

Nice report on a nice mountain.
