MT. Adams, Madison via Lowe's, Spur, Gulfside trails
Date of Hike: 2-10-09
Trail Conditions:
Lowe's to the summit of Adams: Broken and well packed. Don't step off the trail, though...you are liable to end up to your knee or beyond
The trail is easily viewed up until a little above Thunderstorm Junction...then the cairns are harder to see. However, many others up there have left foot prints that are easy to follow. Trail from summit to Gulfside Trail NOT easy to see...didn't try to take it...went back down to Thunderstorm Junction and caught Gulfsidefrom there.
GulfsideTrail to Madison: Same, broken and packed. Drifted in places up above King's Ravine and hard-packed slick snow on incline...care should be taken as one slip and down you could go! Slippery hard-packed snow when going down into the col between Adams and Madison. Trail to Madison was packed but slick with hard-packed snow. Easy to follow.
Spur Trail down to Craig Camp: Packed snow most of the way...except as the trail goes around Adams 4...here is calf-high drifts...again, care or potential slipping down into the ravine! I was a bit scared of the possibility of causing an avalance here...This trail was a bit more drifted but still very easy to follow. Cairns easy to see and follow in most places...especially below Thunderstorm Junction. Below treeline...packed but drifted...again, don't step off the trail or you will find yourself up to your knee in snow.
Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes...could be useful but not necessary as most of the trails are packed...the drifts aren't that bad. Crampons very helpful and perhaps necessary for the hardpack, slippery snow.
Comments: These conditions may be very different now since all of the warm weather. Much of Lowe's, below the Quay, was with less snow and some icy spots due to snow loss on our way down on 2-11. Still easy to follow.
