Mt. Cabot via Mt. Cabot Trail and Kilkenny Ridge Trail

Date of Hike: Sunday, January 25, 2009

Trail Conditions: Packed powder, windblown

Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes

Comments:

Parked in snowbank along field about 100 yards before the gate with no issues.

Mt. Cabot Trail fairly heavily travelled up to first junction by snowshoers, skiers, barebooters, dogs, and deer.

Beyond there, trail had 1-2" of new powder up to the last water sign. Some blowdowns and hangers, easy to get around/under.

Above last water sign, trail had drifted in decently in places, but now broken out again.

Kilkenny Ridge Trail toward Bunnell Notch Trail/Fish Hatchery has not been used recently.

Kilkenny Ridge Trail from junction to just below cabin now well packed. Some drifting, but not too bad. Starting just below cabin, to the summit, however, was very heavily drifted. About halfway up, I ended up doing a fairly direct bushwhack to the summit sign and then the highpoint. On return trip, I was able to follow the actual trail (thus both broken out paths should bring you to where you need to go). I also ventured over to the blowdown viewpoint (left when ascending toward summit). Some blowdowns along this section of trail, but nothing too bad.

All water crossings bridged and no problem.
