Mt. Cabot via Mt. Cabot Trail, Kilkenny Ridge Trail
Date of Hike: Sunday, April 12, 2009
Trail Conditions: Dry ground, mud, frozen granular, powder
Special Equipment Required: Light traction
Comments:
Mostly bare ground up to perhaps 1,800 feet. Some open patches beyond there to the last water crossing, otherwise monorail.
Small creek/waterbar crossings mostly open. Main water crossing up high on Mt. Cabot Trail was crossable on a log.
Winter conditions starting on Kilkenny Ridge Trail - hardpacked base with 1-3" of powder on top. Above cabin, the packed footbed strays a bit west, but goes by the blowdown vista and to the true summit (but not direct to the 'summit' sign).
Some blowdowns on the Mt. Cabot Trail, one minor one on Kilkenny Ridge Trail.
Was able to bareboot the entire hike thanks to below freezing weather and no sun. Microspikes would have perhaps helped, but I didn't end up using them or my snowshoes.
