Just another crappy day above treeline in the northern Presidentials. :D

This was another AMC Boston Chapter trip, lead by Steve (Tramper of Lady and the Tramper), I was co-lead. We met at the Ammy parking lot, dropped a car and drove to Cap Ridge, where I finished up my hike last week. The main lot was already mostly full at 9:00 when we started up. The group was Lady and Tramper, Getaway Girl, Mountain Lyon, Annemoon, and myself. We quickly got up to Whirlpool Ledge and confirmed what we had expected; it was going to be a glorious day.

There were lots of people on this route. I've never seen so many hiking up over the Caps like that, although we never had to wait in line for some of the scrambles. Most folks were going a bit faster than us, except for one couple that was having a bit of trouble on the scrambles. They made it up, I hope they made it down. We paused at the Cornice Trail junction and most of the other groups were headed for Jefferson, so we got a bit of solitude.

The Cornice was fine over to Montecello Lawn and the Gulfside trail. Lady Heather (our designated whiner for the morning) was having trouble with her Camelback and lost much of the water to an undiagnosed leak. Watch out for that. Once on Gulfside we cruised right on over to Sphinx Col under the watchful eye of the Cog.

Near the summit of Clay we pulled off onto the rocks for lunch and the stellar view into Great Gulf. You'd think I'd get blase about weather like this in the northern Presies since I've had so many good days up there, but it never gets old. We ran into Jim Lombard just before the south summit of Clay and had a nice viist. He was doing a much more ambitious hike, I lost track of all the summits he was doing. I can't remember which summit was determined to be the higher, we hit both, then looped back to Jewel trail for the descent. It's longer than it should be, but we all made it down the to Cog (bypassing the missing bridge on the bottom section of the Jewel) and did the short road walk to the cars.

After doing the car fetch (and avoiding the crazed driver in the Cherokee on Jefferson Notch Road) we hit the Mooseland for a beer and pizza for dinner. While there I met up with MtnMagic in the bar. Where did you hike that day? Then the long drive home with two sleeping passangers. :)

Pictures are HERE.

Enjoy,

Nice report and great pics. The Caps is one of my favorite trails - i think it is the first one I ever did that I did not think I would be able to do. Looks like you had a great day out there!

Thanks Dave! Great hiking with you and we couldn't have asked for a better day on a better trail. Caps Ridge is definately a favorite...although every time I descend the Jewell I swear I'll never do it again--that's got to be the longest 3.7 miles in NH!

Looking forward to hiking with you again--maybe on your first Boston H/B Chapter lead!

Happy Trails :)
Steve

I may end up co-leading another trip in two weeks that ends up coming down Caps Ridge, that'll be my third trip on that trail in a month.

It seems to have become a much more popular trailhead in recent years, the parking lot is usually full on the weekends with cars parked along the road. I've been extremely fortunate to have dozens of great days above treeline in the northern Presies. I'm spoiled.

Nice to meet you Dave as well as Lady&theTramper and others. We descended into Sphinx Col after Clay and John felt his ankle was too sore to go to Jefferson. Still a great 3 summit day, incredible weather. We saw some of your group at the Ammo parking lot. Nice to finally meet the man behind "The website." :)

And I didn't get any pictures of you. :(

Actually, it seems to be my element up there. I will have hiked that section of trail three times this month.

What a great trail, and a perfect day to be on it. When we first came upon your group, it was obvious that you weren't having any fun at all :)
Lets hope the weather is as good for this coming weekend!
