5 miles, 2200 vertical
Trail conditions: An inch or so of crust over combination of new and old snow. Snowshoes not essential, but you will want them if you continue past Mt. Crawford toward Mt. Resolution. Microspikes were helpful in getting up the steeper sections. A pair of hikers had gone as far as the first outlook, and it's pretty well beaten down up to that point. From there to Mt. Crawford, you will find a single set of prints (mine).
Highlight of the hike: bear prints in the snow, both front paws and back paws. You can find photos and more detailed description at http://streamsandforests.wordpress.com .
I think the view from Mt. Crawford is one of the best in the Whites!
