Trail Conditions:
With the weather that’s coming in this evening (30-Nov-2008), the trail conditions being reported here will likely change quite a bit.
However, as of the date of this hike, the Avalon Trail consisted of hard-pack consolidated snow from the trailhead to the summit of Mt. Field. There were no blowdowns, and all water crossings were very doable.
As a side-note, I spoke with several different hikers along the way who had been on the Willey-Range Trail between Tom and Field, and Field and Willey. They reported that this trail was well broken out for the entire distance.
Although the sky was gray and overcast, there were the usual good views from Avalon. But, in the short one-hour it took to trek from Avalon to Field, the weather had deteriorated considerably and views were quite limited from Field due to cloud cover.
