Mt. Field, Mt. Willey, Mt. Tom via Avalon Trail Willey Range Trail, A-Z Trail, Mt. Tom Spur

Date of Hike: Wednesday, December 31, 2008

Trail Conditions: Loose granular, frozen granular, windblown, packed powder

Special Equipment Required: See below

Comments:

Avalon Trail to A-Z Trail junction - barebootable without postholing. Light traction if preferred.

Avalon Trail to Avalon Spur junction - slippery frozen granular. Traction needed. Used MSR snowshoes without an issue.

Avalon Trail (and WRT) to Field - a bit of a mess due to lots of postholes. Snowshoes recommended.

Willey Range Trail from Field to Willey - decent amount of drifting snow over frozen granular. Snowshoes recommended.

Willey Range Trail from Field to A-Z Trail - some postholing, snowshoes recommended.

Mt. Tom Spur Trail - probably barebootable with light traction.

A-Z Trail from Mt. Tom Spur Trail to Avalon Trail junction - barebootable perhaps with light traction. Not much postholing at all.

None of the water crossings were overly tricky (there's some sort of improvised bridge over the first half of the first one, made out of pipe).

Every trail segment above has at least one blowdown that will need to be cleaned up (too cold for me to want to do so today). Nothing tricky to get over/under, however.
