Name of mountain(s): Garfield
Name of trail(s): Garfield Tr. Also the Garfield Ridge and Gale River Trails
Hike date(s): 8/13/05
Weather and trail conditions: It was overcast to start, then partly cloudy to no clouds.
Total miles hiked: 11.5 (13.1 due to road walk)
Trip report: The night before, we stayed at the Sugarloaf I campsite. We got up early and dropped my truck off on Haystack Rd. Then we drove over to Gale River Loop Rd. and parked at the Garfield Tr. trailhead. We geared up and were on the trail by 7:20am.
The trail was nice and easy for most the way up. Once we were in the switchbacks, it never seemed like the trail would end. Turn a corner, a long straight section of trail. Turn the next corner, a long straight section of trail. And so on, and so on.
We finally got to the Garfield Ridge Tr.
The climb up to Garfield was a little slippery due to the rain from the night before.
When we got up to the summit, there were several other people up there.
We saw the old fire tower foundation and looked for a way to get up to it. The wind was blowing hard on the summit. We could see a bunch of mountains, even Mt. Washington way off in the distance. We couldn’t see Lincoln and Lafayette because there was a cloud over them. We only spent a few minutes on the summit.
Going back down the mountain was slippery.
Our plan was to head over to Galehead and the Twins.
It was a rough descent down the Garfield Ridge Tr., very steep and slippery in spots. Once we got down, the trail had major ups and downs. Half way to the Gale River Tr., we decided to chance our plans. We decided that we would hike to the Gale River Tr. and head down to the Gale River Loop Rd.
The remainder of the hike went ok. It was the first time we went hiking this year and we started to feel it.
Once we got to the trailhead, we took a short break.
I took out the map and figured out which direction I had to go to get our car. Jenifer stayed behind and I took the ½ hour walk to the car.

It's too bad we all missed you, being up there for HikerBob's 48th later that day. You also unfortunately missed the beautiful, clear, sunny weather on the summit just a short time later. :(

BUT ... it's good to hear that you're out on the trails again!
:)

The link to your album doesn't work because you made it from "My Photos" which doesn't work for the rest of us plebians.
