Date of Hike: Fri. 4-24-09
Trails: Zealand Rd. and Hale Brook Trail
Zealand Rd. was clear of snow. Hale Brook Trail was snow free to 2350'. Somewhat of a rail starting to form. I put on my micro spikes at that point. I changed to snow shoes at 3050', just after the last water crossing, where the snow became deep, soft and unconsolidated. Snow shoes recommended for this trail for awhile.
About 3" of new snow above 3000 ft. All the branches were snow covered and dripping. It looked like mid February. Above the last crossing the snow hasn't started to form a rail yet. It still has a trough track just like mid winter. A few walk unders and no problems with the water crossings.
Still remnants of the snow pile on the summit for some views.
Great day with sun, no wind, and warm temps. I talked with two young ladies who had hiked up Lend a Hand from the Hut. They were the only ones that I saw all day.
