Mt. Hale

Date of Hike: 06/27/09

Participants: Petch, Crazy Bob

Trail Conditions: Hale Brook Trail to Mt. Hale- Moist with both stream crossings no problem. Lend a Hand Trail down to Zealand Hut- Wet with mud in spots and slippery. Zealand Trail out to Zealand Road- Easy going through most of it, some of wooded sections muddy and slippery. Zealand Road back to car- road nicely crowned, and well ditched. Just a few pot holes.

Special Equipment: Bug dope, Rain parka, poles helpful

Comments: With weather conditions as they were we decided on a predominantly view less peak that we need to check off the list. So, Mt. Hale it was. Driving up through Crawford Notch, the fog was lifting with peaks coming into view. Began the hike at 8am at the Hale Brook Trail parking area. Only a couple cars. Decided to add some miles to the trip by making a loop down to Zealand Hut, and taking the road back to the car. The 2.3 miles on the Hale Brook trail went quickly. Only saw a couple hikers. At the top, all you could hear was the sound of bugs. Crazy Bob was testing out his new purchase of trail-runners to replace his heavy leather boots. I think he only sprained his ankle once. The 2.8 miles down the Lend a Hand trail was a much more interesting. A trail with much more varied terrain. We were able to get a few views of Carrigain in the distance as the clouds broke apart. We saw moose tracks everywhere and were really hoping to see one, but no dice. Saw just a few hikers on this section. Lots of hikers at the hut, and on the adjacent falls. Zealand Trail down to the road was quick and full of hikers going up to the hut. Starting hearing thunder, then the rain began when we hit Zealand Rd. It rained the last mile road walk back to the car. Finished at 12:40pm.
About 8.9 miles, 4 hours 40 min's hiking, 5 hours driving.
