Mt. Hale via Hale Brook Trail
Date of Hike: Saturday, May 9, 2009
Trail Conditions: Bare ground, mud, snow monorail
Special Equipment Required: None
Comments:
Zealand Road is open.
Mt. Hale Trail is dry to the first main water crossing, and wet but bare to the second water crossing. Increasing patches of monorail above that (ie starting at the switchbacks), becoming consistent within quarter of a mile. From there to the straightaway, monorail is anywhere from a foot to three or so feet deep. Somewhat firm, but crumbling. You can walk beside it for a little while, but much of it is wall to wall coverage.
Summit is mostly snow free, other than a small snowbank where the snow tower once stood.
Decent number of blowdowns (a few will take a decent sized saw), but my body requested the day off trail maintenance.
First water crossing a bit tricky, but doable if you're willing to leap. Second one easily crossed on wet rocks.
