Mt. Hayes via Mahoosuc Trail
Date of Hike: Monday, April 13, 2009
Trail Conditions: Dry ground, mud, spring snow, ice
Special Equipment Required: None to view ledges, snowshoes if any extended travels beyond
Comments:
Hogan Road is in somewhat rough shape - I wouldn't attempt unless you have 4WD and decent clearance. Still some snow on it, some mud, washed out waterbars, and exposed culverts.
Trail is mostly snow free up to just beyond Popsy Spring. Water crossings rock hoppable. Some patches of snow and ice, but barebootable. Decent amount of running water/mud above the dirt road, but still doable.
Above the view ledges, there's a good 1-3' of snow all the way to the highpoint. I was able to bareboot it (some postholing, especially when stepping near the moose postholes), but I'd recommend snowshoes if you intend to go any further, or do any explorations.
I removed some blowdowns, but there are still some remaining, all of which could be cut with a small saw.
