Mt. Jackson via Webster-Jackson Trail (Jackson Branch)
Date of Hike: Thursday, December 25, 2008
Trail Conditions: Packed powder, ice, bare ledge
Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes, Microspikes
Comments:
Parking lot across from trailhead (adjacent to trails) was well plowed.
Webster-Jackson Trail was broken all the way to the summit of Jackson. Bugle Cliff was also broken out. Elephant Head and the Webster branch did not look to be broken out, however.
First water crossing is not yet bridged - decent amount of water flowing through, but I think we were able to break down the snowbanks enough to make it an easier crossing. The other water crossings were no problem.
First set of ledges were covered in snow. Snowshoed all the way to the base of the summit ledges - those were mostly dry, though there was still plenty of ice. Microspikes were adequate to get up it.
Decent amount of blowdowns on the trail - all but one are now cut up and/or removed. Remaining one will require a larger saw (or axe) than I have. Only about 3 feet of clearance to crawl under it.
