We tagged along with a dog hiking group on Sunday to revisit Mt Kearsarge. We had previously hiked it last December for the NH Fire Outlook Tower Quest and we were greeted with a beautiful undercast at the summit back then. At the time we didn't realize it was also on the Views and Brews list, so we needed to hike it again.
There were 14 hikers in the group and 13 K9 companions that made the hike. The weather conditions were fantastic after living through the heat wave of the last week. We did sweat getting to the summit, but the lower temperatures and less humidity were welcomed. We parked at Winslow State Park and hiked up the Barlow Trail. The trail conditions were really good, slight muddy areas here and there, but overall the trail has had great trail maintenance. The Barlow Trail does not offer many views until you get near the top.
As we got near the summit, the views we got were quite different from the last journey we made to the summit. It was hazy, so the views of Boston were tough to find, but there were still a sight to see. There is a small bog, right before the summit too that has a sign asking that people and dogs avoid it. The fire tower and cell tower were quite visible at this point and we continue to them. The summit, which is mostly bare due to a forest fire in 1796, had other visitors besides our group including young children. One of the nice things about Kearsarge is that you can take the auto road up from the Rollins State Park side and be within .6 miles of the summit if you have small children or don't feel like a longer hike. That side will also qualify you for both lists.
We climbed the fire tower, then took a break, enjoying the views before heading down for a potluck lunch at the picnic area. After that, those of us going for the Views and Brews list headed over to the Flying Goose Pub. It was a great day and a great way to celebrate the end of the heatwave. Smile
For anyone who might be interested we did post a video of the day on our Youtube channel...
