Mt. Madison, Mt. Adams, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Washington via Valley Way, Osgood Trail, Gulfside Trail, Air Line Trail, Lowe's Path, Israel Trail, Jefferson Loop, Crawford Path, Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail
Date of Hike: Monday, February 16, 2009
Trail Conditions: Frozen granular, packed powder, ice
Special Equipment Required: Traction
Comments:
Valley Way to Madison Springs Hut - barebootable
Osgood Trail to Madison - Microspikes
Gulfside to Airline to Adams - Microspikes
Lowe's Path to Israel to Gulfside - Microspikes
Gulfside to Jefferson Loop to Jefferson - Microspikes for ascending, but crampons would be required descending.
Jefferson Loop to Gulfside to Washington - Microspikes
Crawford Path to Lakes of Clouds Hut - Crampons required. Very bad sidehill about halfway between Washington and the hut, anything less than crampons could result in a very dangerous slide. We had our ice axes planted just in case. Water crossing below lake just before hut was very tricky - seems like an ice dam broke minutes before we reached it - water was absolutely gushing and could be heard well up the trail.
Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail to Cog Base - Crampons a good idea for descending the steeps. Part of the trail just before treeline was flooded, likely due to ice dam break. Looks like we were perhaps the first people down the trail after it happened. Water crossings on trail snowbridged.
