The Appalachia parking lot was full today and everyone headed up Valley Way. For that reason the trail was packed hard. MSRs were the order of the day with a few Tubs thrown in. Most of those who went up used snow shoes and for that reason the trail was packed hard and smooth. It has been so well packed that it could be bare booted without hurting the trail.
Streams were not a factor on this trail. There was one walk around blowdown a little above 3000', otherwise the trail was clear.
From the hut to the top everyone took off the MSRs in favor of other traction. Many wore full crampons. I used Micro spikes which worked to perfection.
There was a brisk breeze above the tree line, but nothing that came close to blowing you off balance. It was cold up there, but with a clear blue sky and bright sun, when properly dressed, it was really quite comfortable. The views were spectacular.![Smile :) :)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
This was a rare day above the tree line and many people took advantage of it. This was Lauky's first winter presidential. He couldn't have had a better day to do it.
