Heather, Steve and Mckinlee and anyone else interested.
My wife and I hiked Staightback Mtn and Mt. Major today (3/28/10). We went up the Brook trail (one crossing of note but even that was minor) to the jct. with the Staightback/Major link. We went over to Staightback. There was no snow for most of the Brook Trail but when we got up toward the top (link trail) there was one section that was packed and icy. We still barebooted as did most everyone else that was there today. The link trail did have some snow but was easily barebootable (needed snowshoes last year at this time). The little col just before the Straightback summit was icy, but doable without traction. Reversed, and went back to Mt. Major. From the link up to Major no snow. Some wet and muddy spots but that was it. We came down the main trail and here it was icy! Some wisely turned back and went down some of the less steep trails. We put on microspikes and were fine. Many were still coming up this trail. Based on conditions today and the predicted weather for the week, I don't think there will be any snow by the weekend. Views were as always great.
Enjoy,
Ken
