Date of Hike: 02/21/10

Trail Conditions: Well-packed trail. Only a couple small blowdowns. Patches of bare-ground early on the trail and brief periods of ice further up. All brook crossings were well-bridged. Plenty of parking at lot at bottom.

Special Equipment: I wore MicroSpikes the entire day, but switched to crampons near the summit when I started having a little trouble maintaining traction (and the marks I was following indicated a previous hiker was wearing them all the way up the final climb). Not necessary, but I thought I was the only one on the trails and played it safe. The other hiker I shared the trails with appeared to wear snowshoes all day.

Comments: Absolutely beautiful day on the trails. Clear skies, warm, and sheltered from the wind. Attempted to hike over to Whiteface but decided after about ¾ a mile that I wouldn't be able to hike at the speed I deemed necessary; snow was loose and required snowshoes, and the swapping out of gear across the ridge would take too much time to reach trailhead before dark.

Only took a couple pictures today, but they're over at: http://buchhomr.blogspot.com/2010/02/mt-passaconaway-via-diceys-mills-tr.html

Round-trip (including failed Whiteface attempt): 10.6 miles / 5 hours
